Motivational Interviewing Skills that Promote Peer Empowerment

Motivational Interviewing Skills that Promote Peer Empowerment

10:00 am – 6:00 pm
August 10, 2026

This full-day, interactive Motivational Interviewing (MI) training teaches peer support practitioners how to help people find and strengthen their own reasons to change. Participants learn the spirit, theory, processes, and core skills of MI, with hands-on practice throughout. Offers 6 (six) NAADAC CE credits.

What You’ll Learn

  • Define MI and how it differs from directing and following
  • Describe the MI spirit: collaboration, acceptance, compassion, evocation
  • Recognize reactance and the righting reflex in real conversations
  • Work through the four processes: engaging, focusing, evoking, planning
  • Practice OARS skills, including complex and double-sided reflections
  • Identify change talk and assess readiness using the Stages of Change

What You’ll Take Away

Practiced skills in reflective listening, accurate empathy, and the ASK-ASK-TELL-ASK approach to offering advice with permission, plus change rulers and decisional balance questions you can use right away.

Funding for this initiative was made possible (in part) by grant no. 1H79TI088037 from SAMHSA. The views expressed in written conference materials or publications and by speakers and moderators do not necessarily reflect the official policies of the Department of Health and Human Services; nor does mention of trade names, commercial practices, or organizations imply endorsement by the U.S. Government.
